I just field-tested our Mekong River cruise to confirm it meets my high standards. Short version: It does. See the photo diary on Facebook and Pinterest.
Below are the highlights, how this helps you plan better, and what I’m scouting next.
Mekong Highlights: Vietnam & Cambodia
From Hanoi’s Old Quarter with thick coffee and moody rain to the limestone drama of Ha Long Bay, the trip felt cinematic. In Siem Reap, Angkor Wat lived up to its legend, and Ta Prohm showed nature reclaiming carved stone. It was fascinating to see the beautiful coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist histories.
Aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaDara, the river set the rhythm. We stepped into stilt homes, chatted with schoolchildren, and watched silk come to life. In Phnom Penh, we balanced gilded roofs with quiet monk blessings. Drifting into Vietnam, we met artisans in Tan Chau, traced a love story in Sa Dec, and finished in Saigon with the mesmerizing A O Show, bookish cafés, and a rooftop toast.
My takeaway: The Mekong is so much more than a route. Warm hospitality, everyday craftsmanship, sudden storms, and a gentle invitation to slow down are what give the Mekong its heartbeat.
