Mekong Trip Field Test + Upcoming Adventures
Dear Reader,

I just field-tested our Mekong River cruise to confirm it meets my high standards. Short version: It does. See the photo diary on Facebook and Pinterest

Below are the highlights, how this helps you plan better, and what I’m scouting next.

Mekong Highlights: Vietnam & Cambodia

From Hanoi’s Old Quarter with thick coffee and moody rain to the limestone drama of Ha Long Bay, the trip felt cinematic. In Siem Reap, Angkor Wat lived up to its legend, and Ta Prohm showed nature reclaiming carved stone. It was fascinating to see the beautiful coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist histories.

Aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaDara, the river set the rhythm. We stepped into stilt homes, chatted with schoolchildren, and watched silk come to life. In Phnom Penh, we balanced gilded roofs with quiet monk blessings. Drifting into Vietnam, we met artisans in Tan Chau, traced a love story in Sa Dec, and finished in Saigon with the mesmerizing A O Show, bookish cafés, and a rooftop toast.

My takeaway: The Mekong is so much more than a route. Warm hospitality, everyday craftsmanship, sudden storms, and a gentle invitation to slow down are what give the Mekong its heartbeat.

What I’m Scouting Next:

As part of my upcoming trips, I'll do more hands-on research so I can advise you even better.

  1. Mammoth Lakes, CA (January): big-mountain skiing, cozy evenings
  2. Hawai‘i (March): snorkeling, volcano vistas, ocean sunsets (Luzi’s birthday trip)
  3. Alaska “coolcation” cruise (May): glaciers, wildlife, and crisp air offer a refreshing alternative to summer heat

Late summer / early fall next year:

  1. Douro Valley wine cruise (Portugal): Experience golden evenings on deck with chef-driven onboard menus as you float past vine-laced gorges, private quintas, and historic port cellars.
  2. Magdalena River cruise (Colombia): Discover warm hospitality, color, and rhythm as you float past coffee fincas and music-filled towns, and learn about Indigenous and colonial history—paired with modern-luxe onboard comfort.

Notes like these always make me smile: "It was so easy once it was planned and organized by Kristina… All we had to do was just follow the itinerary laid out for us on a daily basis. We had an excellent time and made a lot of memories in Rome, Venice and Florence."—Dr. Rewan Bowen
